From his Paris residence, looking in another direction over the Seine, the duke had a magnificent view of the old Louvre. On this sunny October afternoon, citizens of Paris promenade along the riverbank in front of the palace just as they do today. In the duke's flat meadows on the left bank of the river men are harrowing the fields and sowing grain for the early spring crops. Birds cluster in the furrows and to keep them out of a section already sown with grain, the peasants have placed a network of strings hung with flapping white rags and a scarecrow decked out as an archer.
