The engines roared their hymn of power as they flared to 
life with cosmic fire.  My hands trembled with their echoes 
as, wrapped in fields of control and protection, I opened 
the throttles.

I pulled back on the controls, and the engines screamed, as 
my vessel clawed it's way to the stars.  Higher and higher 
we soared, riding a pillar of flame.  We slipped free of 
gravity's firm embrace, and I spread my wings.

The engines fell silent, as with a gentle touch, I angled my 
sails to catch the wind from the sun.  Unbidden, a smile grew 
across my features as I rolled and looped, dancing to the 
music of the spheres.

My joy seemed complete, until a shrill alarm slashed it's 
way through the cockpit.  The dark shape of my foe grew, 
corrupting the pristine beauty of the cosmos.  I moved to 
evade, but a line of scarlet rage seared my flank.

I spoke the command, and the clamps affixed themselves to my 
limbs.  There was a momentary vertigo as the cockpit dropped 
away, and my perceptions shifted and grew, to match the 
reconfiguration.  

The weight of the rifle in my arms felt like an old friend, 
as I turned in place to meet my prey.  Data cascaded across 
my eyes, revealing strengths and weaknesses.  Again the 
bolts flew, only to bounce harmlessly off my sinister field. 
I replied in kind, to better effect, piercing the heart of 
the darkness, and replacing it with actinic light.

Dazzled, I shielded my face.  As my vision cleared, I saw 
more silhouettes against the stars.  More targets for my 
fury.  I crouched in midair, and spread the wealth, 
scattering death to all and sundry.  Surrounded by chaos, I 
rose from the ashes, and surveyed the carnage.  It was good.

Again the darkness came, and I rushed to confront it.  
Energy met energy, and Hell followed behind.  As klaxons 
moaned, my vessel collected scar after scar.  Green icons 
went amber, then red, before fading completely.  My rifle 
spent, my missiles gone, I bowed to the inevitable, and the 
evil took my limbs.  The darkness closed about me, and Death 
spoke his final command...
