Robert Stewart Family

There is a great deal more information available regarding the former bookkeeper at Batsto, and I will update this page as time permits. For now I have this very brief outline of his family tree to offer:

Robert Stewart and Anne Patterson were the parents of the Robert Stewart who lived at Batsto. Their children were:

  1. Robert Stewart of Batsto
  2. Jane Stewart, who married Robert Graham and moved to Kensington, England
  3. George Stewart, who stayed in Ballyshannon
  4. John Stewart, b. 29 Sep 1811. John married a woman older than himself, and had at least three children:
    • John Stewart, b. abt 1846
    • Jane Stewart, b. 1847
    • ? b. abt 1852.
By the early 1850s John was living in New York City.
Robert Stewart was born in Ireland and was the first of his family to come to America. There he served as bookkeeper and later manager for the Batsto Iron Works. His father was also named Robert, and his mother was a Paterson. He had two brothers and a sister as well: Ann, James, and John.

Robert Stewart married Margaret Green, also from Ireland. She was the daughter of Andrew Green (1791-1857) and Elizabeth Hamilton, and was born in Dormore (outside Ballyshannon) in 1819. Robert and Margaret married in Parish Drumholm in Ireland on 21 Oct 1835. They departed from Londonderry Ireland on the Barque Wolga and arrived in Philadelphia July 5, 1839, (they were in a cabin and not steerage).

Robert and Margaret had several children

  1. Robert Stewart, born 20 Jun 1837, and christened in the Finner Church outside of Ballyshannon. This son probably died in Ireland, for he is not on the boat manifest.
  2. Robert Stewart, b. 4 Jan 1845. He and his wife, Mary, are buried in the cemetery at Pleasant Mills.
  3. Andrew Stewart, b. Oct 4 1839, who at some point relocated to the town of Weymouth, where he served as bookkeeper.
  4. Ann Jane Stewart, b. 28 Dec 1842
  5. Elizabeth May Stewart, b. 26 May 1844
  6. Elizabeth Stewart, b. 18 Jul 1848
  7. William John Stewart, b. 7 May 1851
  8. Margaret Stewart, b. 28 Feb 1854
  9. Mary Eleanor Stewart, b. 24 May 1859

Andrew was married twice; his first wife was named Elizabeth (last name either Haines or Harris). According to her death certificate, she was originally from Millville, NJ. There were children from that marriage but I do not know their names yet. His second wife was Asenath Burr (born in Tuckahoe, NJ on 8 May 1849, d. 27 Dec 1915), and from that marriage came the Andrew G. Stewart (1875-1963) mentioned on the Weymouth Page. There was another son as well, Thomas C. (1880-1942), who married Alice Sauder (1883-1965). They had a son named Thomas C. Stewart, jr. but they lost several children at birth.

In addition to Thomas C. and Andrew G. Stewart, Andrew, sr. had a daughter as well, the Helen Chalmers who is buried at Pleasant Mills.

Andrew G. Stewart married Carrie Mingin, who was born in Small's Hotel in Indian Mills.

Once again, there will later be a great deal more information especially concering Robert Stewart...check back soon
