The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a well known human companion. Its plumage is characteristically brown and grey. The head is brown with a grey crest and white cheeks. The male has a black double chin. The female is grey. It nests in buildings, under tiles and in wall holes. It is a sedentary bird.
The Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) occurs over most of North America. The head is brown with a whitish or grayish median crown stripe and eye stripe. Streaking on the breast produces a black patch on the chest. The bill is dark brown to horn colored. The lower mandible is lighter than the upper.
