Huisache
Huisache is a small scrubby tree that is found in an area extending from the Texas Hill Country to Northern Mexico. Pronounced 'wee satch', it grows in thickets among prickly pear and mesquite, and it is occasionally referred to as Sweet Acacia.
Huisache comes from the language of the Nahuatl Indians, a group of Mexican and Central American tribes. Blooming in early spring, the tree is covered with sweet smelling, ball shaped flowers.
Its bark and leaves have long been used for traditional medicines, and in the south of France its floral essence is used in perfume processing. Hill Country old timers claim that the blooming of the huisaches signals the end of winter. Spring had arrived and it was a time of renewal.
