Jim earned a degree in science from Sydney University, as well as doing post-graduate studies in acoustic engineering. He has a tattoo of Marvin the Martian on his arm (according to several expert witnesses!) Jim on his musical beginnings: "As a teenager I just stayed in my room, and my dad had this old National tape recorder and I used to...I anti-socially stayed upstairs and fiddled around with it."
