Julian Locals Web Site

About

The Content

As the name, Julian Locals Web Site, would imply, this site is designed specifically for those of us who make our home in Julian. That is Julian, California, USA. Since, we do live in such a nice area we tend to have a lot of visitors. So, there will be information our friends that come to see us will be interested in such as lodging, shops and activitities. The Chamber of Commerce and The Julian Fun Site are linked from here for more info.

But back to the unique aspects of this site we have information such as (or plan on having):

Julian Locals Web Site Goes Live Announcement

10-Feb-2000 - Julian Locals Web Site goes live. The idea for a locals only web site was conceived in early January after the existing local web sites came up short.

There are at least two other Julian specific web sites, the Julian Chamber of Commerce web site and the Julian Fun Site. According to the Chamber "The Chamber of Commerce provides one website link, at no charge, to each Chamber member." on their web site (http://www.julianca.com/). This leaves out non chamber members groups such as local schools and churches which may not be interested in commerce. Susan Fowler's Julian Fun Site (http://www.julianfun.com/) states that it "was created to help tourist planning a visit to Julian and to sell Julian products to the tourists"

The Julian Locals Web Site is designed to meet the needs of "those of us that live in Julian". There are featured pages that contain contact information such as phone, address, e-mail and web site links for schools, businesses and organizations. The main page displays one of the featured pages upon each visit to the site. There is an index with all of the featured pages.

For example, what if you wanted to locate the e-mail address for Supervisor of the 2nd District of the County of San Diego. To locate this information one could follow this sequence using the County web site:

  1. Determine the URL for the County of San Diego Web Site.
  2. Enter the URL: http://www.co.san-diego.ca.us/
  3. Click on: Board of Supervisors link
  4. Click on the Dist 2 Dianne Jacob link
  5. Click on the How To Reach Me link
With the Julian Locals Web Site this sequence is:
  1. Click on your Favorite or Bookmark to the Julian Locals Web Site (or the first time enter JulianLocals.com)
  2. Click on the Complete List link
  3. Clink on the Supervisor Dianne Jacob link
Both the County page and Julian Locals page have a mail to link for Dianne Jacob. Both methods work but it is much easier to remember JulianLocals.com than www.co.san-diego.ca.us.

Do you want to know the most recent weather forecast for Julian? Just go to the JulianLocals.com web site. There is a link on the main page for the forecast produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This includes not only the forecast but any "Statements of Warnings" for Julian.

Or maybe you are wondering how many inches it rained since lunch time? If you added JulianLocals.com to your Favorites or Bookmarks then click on it. Then click on the Weather - Report link. This displays a page produced by the California Department of Water Resources with hour by hour graphs of the rainfall, temperature and four other reports for the last 24 hours.

You wake up to the rumble of an earthquake. Are you a little too curious about where and how big it was? Just follow the Quakes link on the Julian Locals Web Site Quick-Links menu bar. This displays a graphic of earthquakes near Julian. It has colored squares of varying sizes to show the strengh along with the color indicating if the quake was within the last hour, day or week. You can pan or zoom out for the bigger picture. This page is provided by the USGS-Caltech-UCSD Seismic Net.

These are just a few examples from the Julian Locals Web Site. The public announcement of the site going live occured on 10-Feb-2000. Since the site is so new it is not complete but it is useful already. Ever here of a web site that was complete?
