April's Attendance Award - $20.00

Each Month one council member is selected to receive an attendance award. The only requirement is to be present at the monthly meeting. The attendance award accumulates until a member wins. Come out to the monthly meeting for a chance to win. April's pot is $20.00.

GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS

Of necessity my comments must be brief this month. A significant highlight for the month of March was the third degree hosted by our council on March 8. It is significant in two ways - the first third degree to be hosted by our council and seven Brother Knights of our council participated (the most at any single degree ceremony in many years). This is evidence of a healthy council that is growing and will continue to actively pursue our commitment to support the Church, the Community, and our families. Let's build on this success - remember to invite a Catholic gentleman of the parish to learn more about the Knights and join us for our social/recruitment event on Monday April 7.
Vivat Jesus!

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS

Brother Knights, Catholic Gentlemen,
While always praying, and never disbelieving in them, I don't think I ever fully comprehended "the power of prayer" until two recent events. Shortly after listening to a fellow parishioner espouse 'the power of prayer", rather forcefully, I gave it some thought when my 7-year old asked me "Daddy, HOW does prayer work?" Having just spent a few days thinking hard about it, I told him that it seemed to me that prayers where like those little healing cells in our body that know just where to go to cure our hurts, cuts, bruises and diseases. Just how and why they don't seem to always work, they always perform their little task. But one thing we know for sure, if we don't create the prayer ourselves, we cannot hope in anyway to influence a good outcome.
Make an effort this coming month gentlemen to start or reinforce a habit of prayer.
Vivat Jesus!
Bob Spuhl

10th Anniversary of Father McGivney's Cause

The cause for the Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney opened on December 18, 1997. Over 10 years, devotion to Father McGivney has grown worldwide, and membership in the McGivney Guild (www.fathermcgivney.org) has surpassed 122,000.
A good insight into the life of Father Michael J. McGivney can be found in the book "Parish Priest." The best-selling author Douglas Brinkley with Julie M. Fenster wrote Father Michael J. McGivney's biography. It is a must-read for Knights of Columbus as well as for those who have interest in religious history and culture.
A few used hardcover copies can be obtained at $9.00 each by contacting District Deputy Merv Eberhardt at MervEberhardt@comcast.net. List price is $24.95 with discount price over $15.00 (without shipping).

April Meeting and Social

Monday Night April 7th, is a monthly meeting and recruitment social event. We've scheduled a council social and recruitment event on Monday night April 7th to coincide with our monthly meeting. That night is the Men's NCAA Basketball Championship. The schedule for the night is:
  • Monthly Meeting at 6:00PM in the all purpose room
  • Weekly rosary for the sick of the parish at 7:00PM in the chapel
  • The social at 7:30PM in the Family Life Center
  • We hope this schedule will better support the weekly rosary and that the "heavy" snacks we serve at 7:30 p.m. will allow the members to attend the 6:00PM meeting and have a late "dinner" at 7:30 p.m. Recruits are invited to join us at the rosary at 7:00 p.m. and then accompany us to the Family Life Center. Everyone is strongly encouraged to invite an eligible member of the parish to join the Knights. This is a great opportunity for us to expand our membership. If you have any questions about the April 7th "event", please contact Paul Lucas or Chris Nascone. We're hoping for a great turnout of members (and prospective members).

    Saturday night Family Social, May 17

    Our council is planning a social for council members and spouses and families Saturday night May 17 on the church grounds. We're planning a pot luck with the main dish(es) provided. K of C Hockey Night

    Our 1st hockey night took place at the Huntsville Havoc hockey game on Friday night March 7. Our group of 14 had a good time - good seats, recognition on the scoreboard and by the public address announcer, and good company. All that we lacked was a win - maybe next year.

    Annual Dues

    Please contact the Financial Secretary as soon as possible if you haven’t paid your annual dues. As our FS, Ben Cumbie has many things that he must do to keep the Council in running and needs your help in keeping your dues current.
    Our Council Financial Secretary Ben Cumbie prepared and mailed statements to all members in December for remittance of annual dues for the 2008 calendar year. Annual dues are $36. Please be prompt in replying to Ben to help make this annual task as smooth as possible.

    Pope Benedict XVI

    Many of you may know that Pope Benedict XVI has planned his first visit to the United States on April 15-20. The Knights are busy "preparing the way" for the pope's visit, including a special recruitment program. All First Degree exemplifications through June 30 will be held in honor of Pope Benedict. Candidates will receive a commemorative certificate. Every Knight who proposes a new member through April 20 will receive a commemorative medallion. Every new Knight initiated through April 20 will have his name listed in a special book that will be presented to Pope Benedict. There were already many great reasons to recruit new members to our order. There are now a few more. Time for us all to get busy - wouldn't you say?

    Volunteer Hours

    Remember if you do any type of volunteer work, please keep track of the hours and report it to the Council. This information is submitted to the State in periodic reports. This helps the Council, the Parish, the community, and the Knights of Columbus receive recognition for these efforts. Please inform the Deputy Grand Knight of your hours every month.

    PRAYER LINE

    Taking care of our Brother Knights in distress is one of basic principles espoused by our founder, Father McGivney. Please remember our sick Brother Knights and those deceased in your prayers. If anyone knows of a Brother Knight in distress, contact Kirk Foeller (885-9788 or email).

    Remember the Prayer Line also includes family members and friends. Being Catholic is not a requirement to have a person's name placed on the prayer Line.

    Twenty-Third Psalm
    The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures;
    He leads me beside still waters;
    He restores my soul.
    He leads me in right paths for His name's sake.
    Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
    I fear no evil;
    for You are with me;
    Your rod and your staff--they comfort me.
    You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
    You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
    and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    my whole life long. 1st Station of the Cross - Act Of Contrition
    Oh my God, my Redeemer, behold me here at Thy feet.
    From the bottom of my heart I am sorry for all my sins,
    Because by them I have offended Thee,
    Who art infinitely good. I will die rather than offend Thee again.

    The Poet's Corner

    Family Dinner
    Bright star! would I were steadfast as thou art-- Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night,
    And watching, with eternal lids apart,
    Like Nature's patient sleepless Eremite,
    The moving waters at their priestlike task
    Of pure ablution round earth's human shores,
    Or gazing on the new soft fallen mask
    Of snow upon the mountains and the moors--
    No--yet still steadfast, still unchangeable,
    Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast,
    To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
    Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
    Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
    And so live ever--or else swoon to death.

    Questions for the Mind

    March’s Questions and Answers:

    E. Eastre (Northumbrian Eostre), from P.Gmc. Austron, a goddess of fertility and sunrise whose feast was celebrated at the spring equinox, from *austra-, from PIE *aus- "to shine" (especially of the dawn). Bede says Anglo-Saxon Christians adopted her name and many of the celebratory practices for their Mass of Christ's resurrection. Ultimately related to east. Almost all neighboring languages use a variant of L. Pasche to name this holiday. Easter Island so called because it was discovered by Europeans on Easter Sunday, 1722.

    427, "of or pertaining to Easter," from L.L. paschalis, from pascha "Passover, Easter," from Gk. pascha "Passover," from Aramaic pasha "pass over," corresponding to Heb. pesah, from pasah "to pass over" (see Passover). Pasche was an early M.E. term for "Easter" The English term, according to the Ven. Bede (De temporum ratione, I, v), relates to Estre, a Teutonic goddess of the rising light of day and spring, which deity, however, is otherwise unknown, even in the Edda (Simrock, Mythol., 362); Anglo-Saxon, eâster, eâstron; Old High German, ôstra, ôstrara, ôstrarűn; German, Ostern. April was called easter-month.
    What is Lent?

    short for Lenten, from O.E. lencten "spring," the season, from W.Gmc. *langa-tinaz (cf. O.S. lentin, M.Du. lenten, O.H.G. lengizin manoth), from *lanngaz (root of O.E. lang "long") + *tina-, a root meaning "day" (cf. Goth. sin-teins "daily"), cognate with O.C.S. dini, Lith. diena, L. dies "day." the compound probably refers to the increasing daylight. Church sense of "period between Ash Wednesday and Easter" is peculiar to Eng.
    When was Easter first celebrated?

    The Encyclopedia Britannica states: "There is no indication of the observance of the Easter festival in the New Testament or in the writings of the apostolic Fathers. The sanctity of special times was an idea absent from the minds of the first Christians." 1

    According to BibleWorld.com, "Some church historians assert that Easter observance began in the first century (CE), but they must admit that their first evidence for the observance comes from the second century." 2,3,4

    There was no consensus within the second century church about when to celebrate Easter. "...the early Christians had followed the Jewish calendar and celebrated the resurrection on the Passover which was the fourteenth of Nisan, the first month of the Jewish year...." "By the end of the 2nd century some churches celebrated Easter/Pascha on the day of the Jewish passover, [sic] regardless of the day of the week, while others celebrated it on the following Sunday." The Council of Nicea in 325 CE later set the date as the first Sunday after Passover. That is, if Passover was on a Sunday, then Easter was delayed by seven days. Thus, it was observed on a date between the fifteenth and twenty-first day of the Jewish month of Nisan. Eventually, the date of Easter was set as the first Sunday after the first full moon (the Paschal Moon) on or after the nominal date of the vernal (spring) equinox: on about March 21st.
    What is exactly meant by the Passion of Christ?

    Simply put, it is the suffering of Jesus at the crucifixion.

    May’s Questions:

    What is the purpose of private property?

    What does the seventh Commandment require?

    What attitude should people have toward animals?
