GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS

Brother Knights,
During a trip to Europe last month, I was indeed blessed to be able to visit Lourdes, France. 150 years ago in 1858, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette in this small town in southern France in the foothills of the Pyrenees. When Bernadette asked who she was, Our Lady answered "I am the Immaculate Conception". The Grotto, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception built literally "on top of" the grotto, and the surrounding grounds are etched in our memory - my wife, my daughter and I will always remember our visit. How can you put into words the feelings of being present where our Mother Mary spoke to us?
A focus on the rosary is quite evident - the more modern Rosary Basilica is located to the front and at a lower level than the main Basilica - it contains three groupings of five chapels representing the five joyful, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries. The luminous mysteries will be honored by a new display of five "chapels" outside the Rosary Basilica to be completed soon.
May is the Month of Mary, our Mother and the Mother of our Church. The Catholic Church holds Mary in a special place in its heart. The United States has a special devotion to Mary as do the Knights of Columbus. Reflect a moment on why we refer to Mary as "Our Lady". She is our Mother - to all of us. We each have a rosary given to us by the Knights - I encourage you to pray the rosary as often as you can during the month of May. The rosary is said each Monday night in the parish chapel at 7:00PM. Why not come and pray the rosary before our next monthly meeting?
Vivat Jesus!
John Bellono

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS

Brother Knights, Catholic Gentlemen,
Since our last newsletter our beloved Holy Father visited our great nation. I was fortunate to have visited the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception only a week before our Holy Father arrived. I was proud to find that the 3rd highest structure in our Capital is the Bell Tower of the Basilica, often referred to as "The Knights Tower" because of our donation of the structure.
Most important to me has been the message the Holy Father brings to us Catholics and the Christian community as a whole. It is quite apparent that our great church still maintains a level of responsibility for the Christian community as a whole. Equally notable is that he did not shy from challenging us Catholics, as well as his Protestant audience of religious leaders, to live by the true faith and not our own individual interpretation which has allowed all Christians to pick and choose our beliefs. He also called us Catholics to the importance of evangelization through the outward pride and expression we should have for our faith amongst all peoples in our daily lives.
Prior to his arrival I challenged a group of protestants, I faith share with, to pray for our Holy Father's success when he visits. While taken aback by such a request, several acknowledged and it afforded me a great opportunity to share the Pope's comments at the ecumenical service and to engage some misconceptions held by one of my protestant brothers. He was surprised by how 'Christ centered' the Holy Father's comments were. Through respectful engagement I managed to convince my Southern Baptist brother that we too believed in salvation through Christ. My professional brother concluded that "The Pope Rocks!" in our email back and forth conversation. Let me know and I'd be happy to share the dialogue with you.
In light of our Holy Father's comments I wish to reiterate the challenge to every one of you brother Knights, to evangelize our faith through your daily interactions with our Protestant brothers and former Catholics.
Here is a link to our Pope's script to our Protestant brothers
Vivat Jesus!

Mother's Day Breakfast

Sunday May 11 is Mother's Day and our annual Mother's Day breakfast. This is clearly our largest breakfast "event" of the year and every able-bodied Knight is needed to man the breakfast. It's our chance to shine for the parish and conduct this big event without a hitch. Let's do our best to please all the Mothers and all our customers - our regulars and those who may be attending the breakfast for the first time.

Saturday night Family Social, May 17

There will be a Good Shepherd Council Family Social on May 17 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the church pavilion and adjacent recreation field.
The social is scheduled from 5:00PM to 8:00PM. This will be a pot luck with the main meat dishes and beverages and tableware provided. Each family is asked to bring a dish to share - a side dish or a dessert (or both of you prefer). Please bring a serving utensil for your dish. The meal will be served about 6:00PM. Those wishing to attend 5:30PM mass are welcome to join us after mass.
Bring your favorite sporting equipment - the Council plans to provide volleyball and kickball gear.
All Brother Knights and their families (spouses, children and grandchildren) are invited. To better estimate the amount of food and beverages required, we request you respond to this invite with the number attending. RSVP no later than Monday May 12 to John Bellono (email is fine as is a phone call - 882-6767).
We hope for a large turnout - hope to see you there.
AND - we will need the assistance of several Knights with planning, setup, clean-up, etc. Please contact Bob Spuhl, Kirk Foeller, or John Bellono if you can lend a hand. Thank you.

Annual Dues

Please contact the Financial Secretary as soon as possible if you haven’t paid your annual dues. As our FS, Ben Cumbie has many things that he must do to keep the Council in running and needs your help in keeping your dues current.
Our Council Financial Secretary Ben Cumbie prepared and mailed statements to all members in December for remittance of annual dues for the 2008 calendar year. Annual dues are $36. Please be prompt in replying to Ben to help make this annual task as smooth as possible.

Insurance News

Difficult times often cause us to refocus on the time-tested basics. Permanent participating insurance, based on dividends and simple compounding, possesses features and benefits that exist in no other financial instrument: these include strong guarantees, unique tax benefits, dividend participation, and a tremendous hedge in a down stock market. A tremendous hedge against monies that will inadvertently get spent on unavoidable costs that are part and parcel to the facts of life.
By using your policy dividend to purchase paid-up insurance you can increase your permanent life insurance coverage.. When you choose thisdividend option, your dividend becomes a single premium that purchases additional insurance on your life....regardless of your health! How much paid-up additional life insurance depends on your age. Over time the increase in your policies face value - the amount that you're insured for - can increase substantially. What's more, you're paid-up additions build cash value and are eligible to receive dividends beyond that of the basepolicy and with no current tax liability. (Note: Dividends are not guaranteed.)
One final note: You aren't stuck with any particular dividend option. At any time that your policy is in effect you can change the way that dividends are paid to you. The other dividend options are:
  • Leaving dividends on deposit to accumulate interest.
  • Taking dividends as cash deposit.
  • Applying your dividend to pay all or part of your premium.
  • Applications of permanent insurance include estate preservation, buy/ sell agreements, charitable giving, protection from creditors, as well as replacement of medical and final expenses.

    Canned Goods Drive

Don't forget those canned goods. Each Knight is asked to bring just one canned good or money to the monthly Council meeting. The food or money goes to the Church pantry for support of the poor and hungry in our community. Remember charity is a Knight's duty, not a courtesy.

    Volunteer Hours

Remember if you do any type of volunteer work, please keep track of the hours and report it to the Council. This information is submitted to the State in periodic reports. This helps the Council, the Parish, the community, and the Knights of Columbus receive recognition for these efforts. Please inform the Deputy Grand Knight of your hours every month.

    PRAYER LINE

Taking care of our Brother Knights in distress is one of basic principles espoused by our founder, Father McGivney. Please remember our sick Brother Knights and those deceased in your prayers. If anyone knows of a Brother Knight in distress, contact Kirk Foeller (885-9788 or email).

Remember the Prayer Line also includes family members and friends. Being Catholic is not a requirement to have a person's name placed on the prayer Line.

    A Memorial Day Prayer
    By Rev. Dick Kozelka (ret)
    First Congregational Church of Minnesota
    Minneapolis, MN.
    Eternal God,
    Creator of years, of centuries,
Lord of whatever is beyond time,
Maker of all species and master of all history --
How shall we speak to you
    from our smallness and inconsequence?
Except that you have called us to worship you
    in spirit and in truth;
    You have dignified us with loves and loyalties;
You have lifted us up with your lovingkindnesses.
Therefore we are bold to come before you without groveling
[though we sometimes feel that low]
    and without fear
    [though we are often anxious].
We sing with spirit and pray with courage
    because you have dignified us;
You have redeemed us from the aimlessness
    of things' going meaninglessly well.
God, lift the hearts of those
for whom this holiday is not just diversion,
but painful memory and continued deprivation.
Bless those whose dear ones have died
    needlessly, wastefully [as it seems]
    in accident or misadventure.
We remember with compassion those who have died
    serving their countries
    in the futility of combat.
There is none of us but must come to bereavement and separation,
when all the answers we are offered
fail the question death asks of each of us.
We believe that you will provide for us
as others have been provided with the fulfillment of
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

    The Poet's Corner

On the Grasshopper and the Cricket
The poetry of earth is never dead:
When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run
    From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;
That is the Grasshopper's--he takes the lead
In summer luxury,--he has never done
With his delights; for when tired out with fun
He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed.
The poetry of earth is ceasing never:
On a lone winter evening, when the frost
Has wrought silence, from the stove there shrills
The Cricket's song, in warmth increasing ever,
And seems to one in drowsiness half lost,
The Grasshopper's among some grassy hills.
