GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS
Brother Knights,
Fall brings our most important event of the year É our campaign for the intellectually handicapped - more commonly known as the Tootsie Roll Drive! We call upon all our Knights to support our breakfasts and this most important event. This year both weekends we'll be collecting from Kroger on S. Memorial Parkway (vicinity of Lily Flagg Road and S. Memorial Parkway).
We need you to volunteer for at least one two-hour block of time. We'll first try to put two people per time period before we stack up more. I ask that you please reserve your preferred two-hour block sooner than later...to get the time you'd like. The windows are indicated below with the blocks beginning at the first time indicated and running in two-hour increments. I emailed a roster to everyone we have emails for.
16 Oct 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm (Fri)Please contact Jay Carroll, our campaign chairman via email with your requested time at sniper9901@comcast.net or by phone at 529-2802 (CC me on your emails to Jay at robert-spuhl@us.army.mil).

Other upcoming events include:

October 11: Monthly Breakfast. We've been coming up short on clean up help and the burden on the few is heavy. Please consider supporting this second most important event as it funds the scholarships we offer to Holy Spirit and Catholic High School, and many other ministries in the parish.
October 19: We will host our fall social and invitation to interested catholic gentlemen while we eat snacks/ beverages and watch Monday Night Football in the Parish Life Center. Plan to join us and bring someone you know who might remotely be interested in the Knights. I joined only 4 years ago because someone just asked me.

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT'S COMMENTS
Brother Knights,
You might recall during your 1st Degree exemplification ceremony that charity was mentioned being the main principle upon which the Knights of Columbus was initially established. It was also mentioned that charity was the virtue that "gladdened the heart" of the giver.
As I listened to Sister Rosem ary Fonck, from the Good Shepherd Catholic Center in Mosses Alabama, speak after Mass this past weekend I was taken back by the poverty that existed within our own back yards. At the same time, while Sister was speaking, I began to draw a parallel in my mind of the charitable efforts of the Knights of Columbus and the Good Shepherd Catholic Center. While thanking our parish for its generosity and kindness and while sharing some of her stories regarding the charitable efforts of the mission center, I could see the joy and appreciation that gladdened her heart.
While we are blessed to be living in conditions that are completely opposite to those of our neighbors to the south, as members of the Knights of Columbus we should strive to share our time, talents, and treasures to the extent that our hearts will truly be gladdened. If we avoid practicing the virtue of charity, we would not be considered a good subject in the eyes of heaven as we were reminded during our 1st Degree ceremony.
Vivat Jesus,
Ed Gniadek, Deputy Grand Knight
EDITOR'S COMMENTS
I am concerned that some members are not getting the newsletter. This may be do to the fact that I may not have your correct email address, or because I am sending you an email with multiple addressees with an attachment. Some home or work ISP's firewalls presume that the newsletter is spam or may contain a virus and re ect the email.
I you are not getting the newsletter, please send me, the editor, an simple test email so I know I have your correct email address and can capture it. I will then send you an email asking you to respond so I know that the emails are working both ways. I then will send you the newsletter to see if it get through.
By the way, some of you need to make sure that your inbox is emptied periodically as I do get rejections of the email with the newsletter, because the ISP sends me a rejection notice indication that the recipient's inbox is full.
Vivat Jesus,
Mike Rose, The Editor
Sir Knights,
I recently sent out an email to everyone on my office distribution list. It was very successful and I want to share it with you as guidance to help in our efforts to not pollute the environment. The Pope declared pollution as a deadly sin. The email is below:
"Hi All,
"I want to thank you for your support in the past and mention to our new comers something important to me, recycling. It is what makes America great. Whoever would have thought that a plastic bottle or can could be worth so much? For some reason, each throw away reminds me of the Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty quote that has welcomed so many of our ancestors to America with the words:
'Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!'
The idea of the disregarded given value reminds me of the One who is willing to take our hopelessly wasted lives, pay the ultimate price for the mess we give him, and then tell us that he cares for us with a boundless, unending love and commitment (Isaiah 57:15).
Please place your discarded cans and plastic bottles in the designated recycle box in the break room and I will put them in my blue bin at home where they will become new again."
Vivat Jesus,
Paul Adams, Faithful Navigator

St. Vincent de Paul Society
The following is a brief description from the web. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide organization founded in 1833 by six university students in Paris under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul. Today the Society includes almost 900,000 members spread among 46,000 confraternities in 130 countries of five continents.
The Society's purpose is to provide direct aid to those who suffer, and to help individuals reduce and even eliminate the causes of their suffering, themselves. Society members use their own resources, sharing not only possessions but also the valuable gift of their presence.
Recently there has been an inquiry about establishing a St. Vincent de Paul group at Good Shepherd. Both the Knights and the St. Vincent de Paul Society have a strong focus on charitable works. The Holy Spirit Parish St. Vincent de Paul group is well established and has been active for many years. If you have an interest in learning more about this society and possibly help establish a group at our parish, please contact John Bellono at 256-882-6767 for more information.

Canned Goods Drive
Don't forget those canned goods. Each Knight is asked to bring just one canned good or money to the monthly Council meeting. The food or money goes to the Church pantry for support of the poor and hungry in our community. Remember charity is a Knight's duty, not a courtesy.
Volunteer Hours
Volunteer Hours are due in January of each year to State Office. Please keep a running total of your hours during the year. It would be nice to report them on a monthly basis to the Deputy Grand Knight, as to not make this a major data collection effort at the end of the year. Please tally your volunteer hours for Council, Church, and Community activities and forward them to the Deputy Grand knight as soon as possible but no later than January 15 of each year. It's a time consuming activity to accumulate responses from all our members and summarize them as required - the sooner you can provide them to the Deputy Grand Knight the better. We often overlook community activities such as CASA, Burrett Museum, Habitat for Humanity, Harrison Hardware, and neighborhood swimming associations, etc. Please include these types of community organization activities in your totals. As you compile your volunteer hours, reflect how your time spent in the past year and prayerfully consider how you might better serve those in need in the future. May God Bless all volunteers everywhere no matter where in the world they are.
PRAYER LINE
Taking care of our Brother Knights in distress is one of basic principles
espoused by our founder, Father McGivney. Please remember our sick Brother
Knights and those deceased in your prayers. If anyone knows of a Brother Knight
in distress, contact Grand Knight Bob Spuhl by telephone (426-0030 or email).
Remember
the Prayer Line also includes family members and friends. Being Catholic is not
a requirement to have a person's name placed on the prayer Line.
A good person regardless of
his or her religious beliefs should have our prayers offered to hopefully relieve their distress.
Please remember the following individuals in your prayers:
Bob Sullivan Dave & Judy Aiello Jerry Dombrowski's grandchild Rita Lukens - eye problems Hugo Hart - Melanoma Sandra Hart - Full time oxygen Ed K. - Mother - fell and fractured vertebrae CW5 Benson & his co -pilot- Shot in the leg while flying in Afghanistan. His co-pilot was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. Frank Tomasela's granddaughter - Newborn

The Short Story Corner
This month's Short Story comes I found while looking for a short story. This is a very interesting a way to look at mortality for oneself or may to explain it to someone who ask.
Ones Mortality
What A Wonderful Way To Explain It.
By AnonymousA sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, 'Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.'
Very quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know. 'You don't know? You're, a Christian man, and don't know what's on the other side?'
The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side came a sound of scratching and whining. As he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room, and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.
Turning to the patient, the doctor said, 'Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside this room. He knew nothing except that his master was in the room, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear.
I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing, and that is my Master is there and that is enough.'

An Untitled Poem
By Emily Dickerson
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;

I shall not live in vain."
