About the Linux Distribution List

The Linux Distribution List started as an attempt to catalog and orgranize the various Linux distributions that existed at the time I started it (almost a year ago, I believe, in early 1999 or so). It originated as a single text-only page with a bare-bones list of distributions on it. From there it grew into a multiple page site designed like freshmeat with a search engine (which sprouted from another project I tried). The latest incarnation of the LDL is very similar to the last, except with a redesigned layout (I've gotten complaints about the layout :) and more dynamic content - there are less real pages, and more CGI scripts.

For those of you who like silly details, the Linux Distribution List is hosted by SDF Public Access UNIX System. A mirror site, which you currently are accessing, exists at ProHosting; its URL is http://lightning.prohosting.com/~ldl. Our neat-o domain name, ldl.cx, was provided by Christmas Island Domain Names. They provide free domain names for open source projects (read the FAQ). The old LDL subdomain, ldl.cjb.net, is provided by CJB.net. Many thanks to SDF, ProHosting, nic.cx, and CJB.net for their services. :-) And of course, this whole site wouldn't exist without Linus Torvalds, who began writing the Linux kernel in '92 or so. (If you want a history lesson on that, try linux.com.)

The CGI scripts are written in perl. Most development work is done on a Pentium 200MMX machine with 32MB RAM that runs Debian Linux 2.1r4. Most of the CGI scripts availible here are covered under the GNU GPL, and can be found here. Initial web page design was done on Netscape Communicator 4.7, and icky stuff removed with JOE. Current web page design stuff (like writing non-dynamic pages) is done on a Macintosh Quadra 950 with BBEdit Lite. I also use XEmacs. All hail the great, powerful, and over-bloated XEmacs.

The webmaster is mrg. mrg's homepage is here. Submissions and general comments are welcomed, but be aware that the LDL does not provide Linux help at all. People who submit new distributions, or make us update ones that are already here, get their name stuck at the top of the page for that distro. :-)

All original content is copyright 1999 James Kachel, all rights reserved, unless otherwise marked. (If you submit a distro, the description you post is copyrighted to you, unless you note otherwise.) Trademarks, registered trademarks, copyrights, and other such fu belong to their owners, the names of which may or may not be marked outright. If you wish to use something here, please ask first. Thank you, drive thru. Would you like to try some fries today?

the webmaster is: mrg. the LDL image is mine. the info here is mine unless stated otherwise. everything else is owned/trademarked/copyrighted by their owners. but you should know that already. if you wanna use it, ask first.
