step 4. Configure the ethernet cards and optional services
WARNING This is the hard step. You will need to tell
the system which network drivers and what the arguments to use
Network cards come with an io address and a irq value.
Here are some hints on how to use odd network cards (Click for network info)
If you don't know what card you have, you can place one card in the
machine and have the firewall try each driver in turn
until it finds one that will initialize the card. This prints
out the io address and irp value. After you know the first card, you can
take the machine apart, install the second card and try again.
4.1 setup will ask for the first network driver,
I entered wd
next it asks for arguments
I entered io=0x280,0x300
4.2 next setup asked me for the second driver, I entered a - for none
4.3 setup asked me if I wanted to use dyndns (You need
to say yes if your going to run an internal server)
4.4 setup asked me if I wanted to use a socks5 proxy
(Some people tell me that some games and some versions of icq
work better using socks5)
setup asks you to replace the system disk and then updates
it.
Finally the system boots! Connect the second network card
to your hub
Step 5 you need to configure the machines on the network
First some terms, Each machine is identified
on the network by an IP address. The firewall/router gets two.
Externally the firewall/router gets a dynamic ip
address from mediaone. Internally its called 192.168.0.1
Each internal machine also needs an ip address -
for an nt machine you go to start-settings
network protocols tcp properties
set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1
either set "obtain an ip address from a dhcp server" (this is the normal way) or assign your machine an address.
If your going to run a server you need to assign a ip address , your first machine gets 192.168.0.2, your next gets 192.168.0.3 the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 If you assigned an ip address, you also need to set the dns number (use 192.168.0.1)
After changing the network properties, you need to close all the windows and reboot.
Once you have configured an internal machine, you should
bring up a browser, and go to http://192.168.0.1
This brings up your control panel (OR lets you know
there is a problem)
Almost done
Click on media one - this will show you your MAC address.
You will need to call media one, tell them that you have a new network
card and read them the mac number (Don't say linux). you need to unplug
the cable modem connect it to the first either net port
on your firewall/router and reboot
At this point it should all come up,
If you are using dyndns you need to register at www.dyndns.org
and using the internal web interface turn on the service.
