There are two basic categories of tubular products, pipe and tube.

Tube is primarily used in heat exchangers and instrument lines.   It is also commonly used as interconnections on equipment such as boilers and compressors.   Tube is usually specified by it’s outside diameter and wall thickness.

Pipe is normally identified by "nominal pipe size" or NPS and it’s wall thickness is referred to by schedule number or weight.   Straight pipe is available in two lengths, random or double random.   Random length pipe is 17 feet to 25 feet long and double random length pipe is 38 feet to 48 feet long.   Pipe is normally supplied in 3 end styles;   PE or plain end, BE or beveled for welding or T&C or threaded and supplied with one coupling per length.   If the pipe is ordered T&C then the rating of the coupling must be supplied when ordered.
