Wire Basket (WB) strainers, fabricated entirely of wire mesh, can offer significantly lower pressure drop losses than similar strainers of perforated plate.
The designer must, however, be vary cautious in specifying wire mesh baskets due to their construction limitations.
Inherent construction features severely limit the allowable differential pressure these strainers can withstand.
These strainers are recommended only for light duty gas services.
They may be used in liquid services with low velocities and where pipeline debris are minimal.
Wire basket strainers are not recommended where clogging may generate substantial pressure drops, or where velocities and/or fluid densities are high.
The WB strainer should only be installed with the small diameter pointed downstream.
