|         Valves for discharging and safety devices.   This family of valves are designed to remove fluid from a piping system.   They may discharge to another piping system, to a drain, to the atmosphere or even to a vessel operating at a lower pressure.   They are often automatic in operation.   Since a valve that works by levers and weights can easily be render inoperative by personnel most pressure relieving valves are spring loaded. |

|         Relief Valves.   Relief valves are operated by system pressure and are almost always mounted directly onto either the piping or the vessel that is being protected.   These are designed to relieve the excess pressure in liquid services where a full flow discharge is not required.   Often the release of a small volume of liquid will rapidly lower the pressure in the system being protected. |
