Miscellaneous Valve Terms

This listing is by no means complete.   If you know of a term not listed please send a comment.   I will continually add new terms as I come across them.
Barstock valve   This is any valve that has it’s body machined for a solid block of metal.   It is usually a needle or globe type.
Bibb   This is a small valve that has it’s end turned down.   This is similar to a faucet found in every home.
Bleed Valve   This is a small valve used to drain or draw off a liquid service.
Block Valve   This is an on/off valve that is usually placed as a Battery Limits valves.   It is normally a gate valve.
Blow down valve   This term refers to a plug type disc globe valve that is used to remove sludge and other sedimentary matter from the bottom of vessels, boilers, drums, drip legs, ect.
Breather Valve   This is a special use valve that is automatic operating.   It is installed on storage tanks and other equipment to release vapors or gas on slight increase of internal pressure.   The increase is commonly in the neighborhood of ½ to 3 ounces per square foot.
Bypass Valve   This describes any valve that is placed in a bypass branch around another valve or equipment.   It is normally closed and manually operated.   It is used for maintenance of the main pipe run valves.
Drain Valve   This is any valve that is installed for the purpose of draining liquids from a pipe run or a vessel.
Drip Valve   This is a drain valve found at the bottom of a drip leg that permits the blow down of a liquid from the line.
Flap Valve   This a valve used in low pressure services only.   It is a non return type valve with either a hinged disc or rubber or leather flap.   It is similar to a check valve.
Header Valve   This is an isolation valve that is installed on a branch connected to a header.
Hose Valve This is either a gate or globe type valve with one of it’s end having an external threaded to match one of the hose thread standards.   These are found on vehicles and firewater connections.
Isolating Valve   This is a on/off valve type that isolates either a piece of equipment or a section of piping.
Knife Edge Valve   A slide gate valve with only one disc (knife edged) and one seat.   Used in services of slurries, solids or sludge materials.
Mixing Valve   This is a valve that controls the proportional mix of two inflows to produce a singular controlled outflow.
Non-return Valve   Any type of stop check valve.
Paper stock Valve   This is a slide gate with a knife edged disc or a notched disc that is used in paper slurry services.
Root Valve   (1.)   Any valve placed at the beginning of a branch from a header.   (2.)   Any valve used to isolate a pressure element or instrument from a vessel or a line.
Sampling Valve   Small valve that is used to draw off a small sample of the product flowing through an operating piping system.
Shut off Valve   Any on/off valve that is placed in a line going to or from equipment that is used to stop or stop the flow in the line.
Spiral Sock Valve   A valve that is used to control the flow of powder services by means of a twisted fabric tube or sock.
Stop Valve   An on/off valve, usually a globe valve.
Throttling Valve   Any valve that is used to regulate flow in the just open position
Vacuum Breaker   A special self acting valve, or any valve suitable for vacuum service.   It may be operated either manually or automatically.   It is installed to let a gas, usually it will use atmospheric air, into a vacuum or a low pressure space.   A vacuum breaker valve is installed on the high point of a vessel or a piping run to permit draining.   It can also be used to prevent siphoning in a branch.
