This is a statue of Laurent Clerc, a Deaf educator who Thomas Gallaudet brought to the U.S.A. from France. Clerc taught Gallaudet sign language and the manual alphabet. At the first school for the Deaf in America, Laurent Clerc became the first teacher for the Deaf in America while Gallaudet served as the first principal.
