Illogan, or St. Illogan, is a parish, 2 1/2 miles north from Redruth railway station, in the western division of Cornwall, Penryth Hundred, Redruth Union, and Exeter bishopric, situated on the Bristol Channel. The church of St. Illogan is a new stone building, in the perpendicular style, has tower, porch, chancel, organ, 6 bells, brasses to the Basset family, monuments, font, clock, old register commencing 1539 and ending 1699, and sedilia. The living is a rectory, worth £670 yearly, with residence and 77 acres of glebe land, in the of John Francis Basset, Esq; the Rev. James George Wulff, M.A. is the incumbent; the Rev. John Ellis, M.A., and the Rev. Thomas Prynne Andrews, B.A. are the curates. There are two chapels of ease, one at Trevenson, near Pool, the other at Portreath. There are also chapels for Wesleyans and Reform Methodists, and five National schools, supported chiefly by John Francis Basset, Esq., and placed under the control of the rector. There are two Sunday schools, one at Church Town, the other at Pool. The population in 1851, was 9,219, which includes the inhabitants of the new district parishes of Tucking Mill and Mount Hawke, part of each of which are taken from the parish of Illogan, and also of the Redruth Union workhouse. The acreage is 8,010. The soil is loamy. John Francis Basset is lord of the manor, and, with the Hon. Mrs. Agar and --- Vivian, Esq., chief landowner. The chief crops are barley and oats. The seat of John Francis Basset, Esq., is an ancient and substantially built mansion. Illogan contains the villages of Pool, Portreath, and Church Town. At Pool is a small railway station, and several good shops. At Portreath is a small harbour, the property of Williams and Portreath Company. In this parish is Carnbrea Hill, 700 feet above the level of the sea; it is supposed to have been the central place of worship for the Druids in this part of the county; there are many huge rocks, one called the Sacrificing Rock. On this hill is a lofty monument, of pyramidical form, with the following inscription "The County of Cornwall to the Memory of Francis Lord De Dunstanville and Basset, A.D., 1836."
    There is an ancient encampment at Nance Farm, overlooking Portreath.
     At Tuckingmill Mr. Thomas Davey has ropeyards.
     Bridge and Nancekirk are villages.
     Carnkie is a hamlet.
     Trevenson House is the residence of Charles Andrews Reynolds, Esq.
