How to do what we've done so far

This project is modeled on Writing for Webheads, a group of ESL students and teachers which has formed as a community of learners over the past couple of years. In this community, the 'list' such as the one which we are all reading now, is just one component.

The other components are web pages and occasional chatting, and sharing of all kinds of information (sound, video, image files, and all kinds of information) both synchronously and asynchronously.

Our intent here is to form a similar community of webhead teachers. So, as with the student group, I have taken the following steps to facilitate the development of our community.

First of all, I started a list using http://www.yahoogroups.com
Anyone can start a list, for any conceivable purpose. Egroups has several features conducive to educational groups, which you can check out at the web site.

To use the features, you have to get a password. Would anyone like to send the list a step by step description of how you get a password? If someone does, I'll put it on our website.

That was my second step, start a website.
I used Hot Metal Pro to create our first web page, but I've been using MS Word in the past and saved my files as HTML (very easy). Then I registered for free web space somewhere (I chose http://www.prohosting.com though they now impose banner ads). Then I used ws_ftp to ftp the files to the website.

Third step, establish our community
The community starts forming as we personalize our web page. This will take time because there may be many on our list who just want to sit back and take it all in for a while, and we want people to be comfortable, so you can participate in any way you like. But as and when you are ready, here are a few things you can do.

Fouth step, let's get together
There are a lot of ways we can do this, and I don't want to crowd this email, so we'll come to this in time. Meanwhile, on this list, please feel free to say what comes to mind. The discussion has been great so far and I'm sure we'll learn a lot from each other in the next few months, years, whatever.

On the way to community development

Subject: Vance Steven's on-line voice chat session

I joined in Vance's session yesterday and was very impressed with the HearMe Voice Creation software. I talked on line to Vance in the Arab Emerates, Peter in Hong Kong, and Michael in Australia, and the sound quality was excellent. I recommend everyone to check out http://www.hearme.com and to join in Vance's session next Wednesday.

You can find a log of the chat by following the link to April 26, 2000 from here.

Note, Hear Me no longer exists as a free plugin. At the beginning of 2002 Webheads are using Yahoo Messenger for voice chat and web cam broadcasting.
