News Update: 01/11/00: Shaggy 2 Dope almost DIES, Sabu to be given a push, Rena Mero made an honorary coach, & Tons More Inside...

I must say, last night's showings of RAW and Nitro were both excellent. Between the two shows, I'd think I'd go with RAW in the long run, but Nitro still put up quite a show. If you haven't heard, after RAW went off the air, Mick Foley got on the mic' and announced from this point on... he was back to Cactus Jack! As for Nitro, the ol' folkes did a great job putting over Jarrett, and a few last touches added to this Sunday's Souled Out. Anyway, onto today's Update...
First off, you'd be surprised at those invited to the funeral of Gary Albright. It's a semi-private ceremony, however, Gary's father-in-law [Samu] has invited such wrestling figures as Fatu, who is Afa's nephew, [and you know him as Rakishi Fatu] & high-flying "The Tonga Kid". Some other close relatives that I know you've heard of, but are not attending Friday's funeral, The Rock; & Yokozuna.
As for Axl Rotten whereabouts, it looks like he's made his debut for CW over the weekend. For those unfamiliar with Combat Wrestling, it's staged in midwest USA, and on Axl's debut, he totally ripped apart ECW in a promo'. I'd be pissed, too, if I was cut a week before Christmas.
Looks as if Prez' Vinny Mac's happy with Kurt Angle. The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper says that Vince is so proud with Angle's current role, it may wind him up with the European title, sometime in the near future. Speaking of which, on RAW, did you notice the weird ending to the Edge/Venis match, when Edge told Venis he wasn't the best man..., and then they hugged? WTF...
Contrary to rumors, no, Sabu is NOT fired from ECW. This will give him a little time off to most likely be given a new role, and if anything, it will just lead to a huge push. The rumor got started because Sabu's been overheard talking of retirement in the past few weeks, but nothing confirmed; and, his contract option runs out in 3 weeks. You can bet on ECW picking up on it.
Going back to last night, once again, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka made quite an impact on Nitro. His cage match with Jeff Jarrett, w/ Benoit as the special ref', is stirring up quite a talk, and might've just been last night's best match. If you missed it, Snuka did one hell of a frog splash, and topping it off was an impressive diving head-but from one Mr. Chris Benoit. And to think, Snuka's not even SIGNED anywhere, and he still has it in him. If I were WCW, I'd definitely thinking of always keeping around a spare 2,000. Plus, WCW also convinced Tito Santana for an appearance, if you saw that.
If you've ever read "WOW" Magazine, you'd see why they were just voted one of "Mr. Magazine's" top 30 most notable magazine launches of 1999. With the help of new editor Bill Apter, it beat out another 894 magazine's to enter the 30 prestigous. Congrats' goes out to WOW, and it's staff. Visit WOWMagazine.com for more details.
Rena Mero's an honorary coach? Apparently, it's dreadfully true. Ugh..., it looks as of she'll be "coaching" the Syracuse Smash's home opener this year, obviously doing a promotional appearance. The reason for the team chosen; Marc Mero went to high school right near the Smash's field. Visit RenaMero.com for more on this.
And on a big note, it looks as if Dan Severn has called off his tour in South Korea, slated for later this year, in Spring. It was to be a hyped "Severn vs. Ogawa" bout, on UFO territory, but it looks as if The Beast past cancelled with NWA/UFO's deal, spoiling plans. Replacing Severn will be a now excited Sgt. Craig "Pitbull" Pittman. Pittman said on NWA-wrestling.com that "...it's like a dream come true."
Lastly, in startling news, Shaggy 2 Dope of the ICP had a near brush with DEATH last night... I know it sounds odd, but last night, ICP had a huge show in Chicago's "House of Blues." Shaggy was just getting over a bad case of the flu, and I guess his physical ailing caught up with him, because in the middle of a song, he just plopped unconscious off the stage, cracking his head. In the long run, he only ended up with a concussion, but for a few minutes during the chaos, Shaggy had no pulse, and was not showing any signs of life, at all. Let's hope for a speedy recovery for the insane one.
