The On-Line
Fastpitch Softball e-Manual Project

hosted and managed by New Jersey's West Windsor Wildcats

The Continuously Evolving Fastpitch Softball Learning Aid

The New Jersey West Windsor Wildcats Fastpitch Softball organization are sponsoring this effort to address the one segment of Fastpitch Softball we have found lacking. Although coaches, parents and players spend countless hours on the field, little academic-style time is spent just explaining the game and the strategies involved. This reality is especially frustrating to parents who want to help their young athlete but have never been involved and/or interested in the sport. Fastpitch Softball is a life-size chess game. As in chess, Softball is divided into long periods of little activity followed by a brief flurry of physical exertion and rapid decision making. Just like chess, the number of possible offensive and defensive plays is nearly countless. We believe that the better the fundamentals of the game are explained and understood the better our young athletes will perform on the field. More importantly, our young women will have more fun because the decision making becomes an integral part of their skills which ultimately relieves them of much of the pressure inherent a sport that gives no one a second chance.

This project is unique because it has no single author. The authors are skilled coaches, players and parents who contribute their insights and experience to make this "digital instruction book" a continually evolving e-publication. That's right. You can keep coming back to the Wildcats' Web Softball Manual and find new ideas and articles all the time.

How's it work? The next page contains a table of contents for the entire web book. Start at the beginning or click on a chapter that meet your needs and begin your learning experience. Graphics are included to help make the visual connection with the instructional words. Although graphics may slow down your computer's response time, they are critical for your young player to make the connection between mere words and their actions on the playing field.

When you see this button, there's more information tailored to parents. Usually these include more detailed explanations, tips on safety, specific equipment information, etc. The inclusion of this material is intended to support parents in their efforts not only to better understand the game; but, most importantly, gain insight on how to make the sport as safe and as much fun as possible. So click on the green "parents" button and see what's inside.

Each Chapter or major topic ends with a "Here's My Ideas" button. By clicking on this button you will be provided the opportunity to add your 2 cents (actually you are encouraged to make these submissions). Send us your questions, ideas, things you've learned, practice aids, coaching tips, All items will be reviewed for inclusion in the evolving Web Softball Manual. When your comments are added to the book, you will be listed among the contributing authors. We hope that the list of contributing authors will number into the thousands to make this resource truly universal and important to our readers. Feel free to submit articles and/or pictures. The more information we gather the more significant the Web Softball Manual will become to players, coaches and parents around the country. In the end, the publication will become as necessary as YOU make it.

Naturally we request only serious submissions. Our staff is totally volunteer. The job is daunting enough with wading through irrelevant material. The sport and this manual are "G" rated.

Rights to this material: We encourage visitors to use the material in this web manual to facilitate the understanding and skills necessary to enjoy and excel in the sport of Fastpitch Softball. Feel free to copy and use this material for your own young athlete or fastpitch team. Our only request is that you give proper credit and encourage others to visit and use this manual on the West Windsor Wildcat Web Site.

Anytime you see this graphic you are invited to send us your suggestions for making that section of the Web Softball Manual even better. Clicking on the graphic opens your email window so you can directly speak to us. Don't be shy. It's all for the good of our sport and our young athletes.
